Between heating oil and propane, oil puts out nearly 50% more BTU’s than propane, but propane gas boilers can produce more efficiently than oil boilers. Additionally, oil prices per gallon generally costs more than propane prices per gallon. When the numbers are put together, propane offers a slightly, between 8-10%, better value at BTU’s per dollar. Propane and oil also differ in general tank size, with propane tanks ranging between 500-1000 gallons, while oil are generally in the 200-400 gallon range. Despite the apparent PROs for propane however, most heating professionals will admit that oil heats the home better.
