Winter Driver Safety Tips

Like it or not, Winter is here. The temperature is cold, the wind howling, and the roads are starting to become hazardous at times. It’s during this time of year that we have to take a second out of our day and think to ourselves “Are we properly prepared?” Being ready for Winter driving is important, and if you follow these tips you should find yourself in much better shape!

Take care of your car.

During the summer months people tend to let their vehicles go, not really worrying about breaking down because it’s so nice out. Breaking down in the Winter is another story, that’s why it’s important to make sure your vehicle is in tip-top condition going into Winter. Little things like making sure you have the proper coolant levels and windshield wiper fluid, to larger things like good tires and fixing the odd vibration feeling when you accelerate; Winter is not a time to risk it with your vehicle.

Keep emergency supplies handy.

Sometimes no matter the amount of good planning, accidents happen and we must still be prepared to sit on the side of the road for potentially hours waiting for help, that’s why it’s important to have the right gear with you at all times. Blankets and extra clothing for warmth, a flashlight and flares, perhaps a bag of sand or gravel for traction, jumper cables and a chain; when it comes to being ready if you break down, there’s no such thing as overkill.

Safe Winter driving tips.

When it comes to actually driving in the Winter, it’s all about prep work and awareness. Always clear all the snow and ice from your vehicle’s windows and body, so you can see from every angle and nothing flies off as you drive. Use your brakes intelligently as well; break early and ease into them, avoiding slamming the brakes which will result in skidding on the slick or icy roads. Winter is not the time to relax on the roads, so don’t use cruise control; always be aware of your speed. In fact, generally going slower is a great overall plan for Winter driving.

While these are just a few tips, of the many great ones, if you follow them you will be inevitably safer than had you not. Winter can be a dangerous time, and we at Flynn Energy have your best interests at heart and want to do everything we can to keep you safe out there!
